A Little About Our Programs

Primary Program – Ages 3-6

Our Children’s House primary program recognizes this stage of life as the beginning of control and coordination of mind and body. Learning revolves around tangible experiences. Children use concrete materials to learn math, movable alphabets to explore language, and cubes, cylinders and other objects to categorize, find special relationships, and more.

Early Elementary – Ages 6-9

We challenge each and every child at his or her own level. In our Early Elementary program, students are given the time, resources and materials they need to master material if it proves difficult for them. Advanced students are presented with appropriate challenges to excite their minds. All students are inspired to learn about their world. There is no curriculum ceiling at NRGLC; we have no bored students.

Upper Elementary – Ages 9-12

The Upper Elementary curriculum is designed to be responsive to the social, emotional, and academic needs of students ages 9-12 years old. Developmentally, children this age become stronger abstract thinkers and the curriculum continues to accommodate their developmental changes. As their competency and capacity for independence grows, Upper Elementary students take on more responsibility for their studies. Learning life skills such as time management and project planning are woven into their daily routines. Students arrange their own field trips, make decisions about research topics, and maintain the atmosphere of the classroom, all under the watchful eye of the lead guide.

Middle School Program – Ages 12-15

New River Gorge Learning Cooperative (NRGLC) is a Montessori-based learning center whose mission is to educate the minds, hearts and bodies of our students in a challenging, vibrant experiential learning community.

Our program integrates permaculture, mindfulness and social justice into an immersive educational experience suitable for any learner. Our pedagogy inspires a love of learning and an appreciation for hard work, curiosity, creativity and compassion. In addition to meeting or exceeding West Virginia state standards, our curriculum is designed to address the need for responsibility and independence during this adolescent plane of development.

Hear it from our parents!

The kindness and respect the teachers have for their students, the learning method and tools, and the dedication of everyone involved are just a few examples of what so strongly draws us to this school. Because of NRGLC we spend more time in WV then we probably would otherwise.

Enrolling our child at the NRGLC has proven to be a great decision for our family…Having little knowledge and experience with the Montessori approach to teaching going into it we have certainly been impressed so far.
